Why we exist
Reliable transport can be the difference between keeping a job and losing one, attending education or missing out, reaching healthcare, and meeting caring responsibilities.
On the Road Again is a charitable project in development. We aim to provide practical vehicle support, including preventative maintenance, safety checks and essential repairs, where financial hardship and the loss of reliable transport could place someone’s independence or future at risk.
Our approach
People first. Transport second.
We begin with the person and their circumstances, not simply the fault with their vehicle. Our aim is to understand what is at risk and identify a safe, proportionate and practical form of support.
What we plan to provide
Our first pilot, the Transport for Work Scheme, will focus on people facing financial hardship whose ability to work depends on having safe and reliable transport.
Support may include:
- Preventative maintenance
- Vehicle safety checks
- Essential repairs
- Practical guidance and referrals
Each request will be assessed individually. Support will depend on the person’s circumstances, the condition of the vehicle, available funding and whether the proposed work is safe and economically reasonable.
How support will be assessed
We want every decision to be fair, responsible and focused on the person’s circumstances.
Applications will consider:
- The importance of the vehicle to employment, education, healthcare or caring responsibilities
- The applicant’s financial circumstances
- The safety and overall condition of the vehicle
- Whether the proposed work is practical and economically reasonable
- The funding and support currently available
No support is guaranteed, and each application will be considered individually. During the pilot stage, funding decisions will require approval from at least two trustees.
Working together
On the Road Again aims to work with garages, colleges, automotive businesses and volunteers to provide safe, practical and accountable support.
As the project develops, we also hope to create opportunities for young people to gain experience and develop skills within the motor trade.
Everyone involved will be expected to follow clear standards and put safety, dignity and fairness first.
